Nowhere is perfect. In Ryanair I had 4 days off every 'week' which was great, but I spent at least 1, sometimes more of those commuting to my under-crewed home base which they wouldn't give me. In Jet2 I have a random roster, I work not far off half the number of hours a year, I get tired during the summer in between leave, I spend most of the winter on standby which because I live within 20 mins of the crew room means I can do pretty much anything I would do on a day off apart from hit the beers.

One will suit some and the other will suit others. The roster isn't everything - that applies to both.

As a BA 787 SFO I average about £5300 / month net on pay point 7 and I get 13/14 days off roughly every month.

The big advantage of Jet2 for me would be living up north, which I would vastly prefer for many reasons but not least because its so much cheaper from a cost of living perspective.

Trouble is, it sounds like a lot less days off and not that much more money to sit in the LHS.

As an SFO on the 757, flying 400 hours a year (which is 100 hours more than the last two years!): matching the companies 8% pension contribution expect about £3500-3700 a month take home in the winter flying 2 days a month, flying 10 days a month in the summer taking home £4100. Normal FO salary is approx £6000 less off your gross annual salary so deduct about £250 a month from the above figures, however if you join on the 737 expect to fly double the above averaged out over the year and probably about another £300 a month in sector/duty pay (this is a guess as obviously i don't fly it)

I note from PPJN there is talk of "a possible merger with Airtanker and ongoing negotiations with TUI group"

Jet2.com pilot jobs news for airline pilots and aviation schools

Is anyone able to elaborate on this? Is a TUI buyout on the cards or is this nonsense?

The latest 6th August updates to the Jet2 page on PPJN are highly suspect, with some possible plonker-pulling as Chesty points out. I am doubtful about the AirTanker thing but don't have enough knowledge to confirm or deny this. The 757s will certainly go beyond 2020 and there definitely wouldn't be a 5 year bond for anyone transferring to the 737!

Someone with the know-how (or login) should edit the PPJN info and get rid of that BS.

Jet2 seem to be hiring more DEC. 2 Captains are leaving from my base (Ryanair). Is the lifestyle at Jet2 that good? I know there are options for unpaid leave in winter. What’s the BOGOFF deal? Don’t know any pilots at Jet2 but I know a couple of Cabin Crew who say it’s a nice company to work for. Just a shame they don’t pay a little more for Captains.

Leave is abated by the rate at which it is accrued (ie you lose 3 days/mth) arbitrary really if you take a month off in which you would otherwise have taken leave.

I believe the exception is the BOGOF offer, where you lose 50% of the leave that would have been accrued during your time off.
So if you take 2 months off, you lose 1 month of pay and 1 month of leave (3 days unless you are in a leave bonus year).
Depending on individual circumstances these options also have the benefit of getting some/all of your tax free allowance back. So the net effect is even better than at first sight.

I think you’ll find that BALPA, whilst nominally recognised by the company, have very little joy in engaging in meaningful negotiation with Jet2.

Having said that there has been a decent pay rise every year since I’ve been here.

Fair enough comment. Generally 2-3% plus a few thousand pounds. Profit share comes in to play at the end of this financial year, though nobody is quite sure how it will be divided up.

Hi Chaps

Jumping into this forum as it seems to be the most appropriate; hoping for some advice please.

Just been offered Stansted FO on the ubiquitous 75% contract starting in the next three months. It's a pretty big step down from current role in terms of pay and seat but I need more time at home so content to take the pain for a couple or three years. That said, the commute is going to be challenging as I am an hour or so away from Stansted. Can anyone tell me what the Jet2 standby rules are? And are there any facilities at the base to shower and change? If so I might be able to commute by motorbike during the summer months which would make the A14 a whole lot easier to negotiate. I'm assuming that there is free staff parking?

Standby callout is 2 hrs. The rule is you need to be 1.5hrs away max. Staff parking is included. Not seen any showers around when I last visited STN.

Dave - If you want time at home then the 75% contract would be an ideal starter, the format is:

Jan & Feb - Off completely.
Mar to May - 50% = 10 working days per month
Jun to Sep - 100%
Oct to Dec - 50 %

You'll more than likely be offered 100% after 1 year from date of joining; you can either stay on 75% or go 100% and apply for one of the Winter Leave options, assuming they're offered next year. You'll work hard in the Summer.

Being 1 hour away isn't an issue for standbys, but in Summer you'll struggle to do much more than work and sleep.

Aye, the summer will be busy but I have family in Essex so maybe I can kip overnight there if the commute gets too much.

Are there many 'Go Now!' callouts on standby or do you tend to get a bit more notice? I'm coming over from corporate (17 on/12 off) so this is all a bit new to me.
