A320 First Officer - Europe

Guys,

Does anyone know who the following carrier is?

A320 First Officer - Europe with Storm McGinley | 1401343067

It's being advertised at 20,000 Euro a year. That's frankly criminal, how an agency can advertise such lowly pay for a professional pilot position is frankly, embarrassing.

A 79 million euro jet, and the pay to fly it is 20k a year.

Are things really this bad?

If they don't get enough applicants then the pay will go up. The aviation authorities don't stipulate a minimum wage for a pilot. The government of the AOC country might set a country minimum wage.
Just because the machinery is expensive doesn't mean the operator has to be.

I like the job title - "Senior First Officer". And only after 500 hours which could have been gleaned through a p2f scheme for one of the third worlds leading operators no less.

Its quite a sad indictment on the industry that someone will pay to fly and then think they have hit the big time when a gig like this comes along. Then a few years at Whizz before heading to a 2nd tier operator before then maybe (its a big maybe as well) getting into a national carrier. All the time they just perpetuate the race to the bottom on T&C's.

This was always going to happen. If people mistakenly believe that paying for hours on type will lead to uptopia, then being paid this measly sum will be seen by some as acceptable. I am sure they will be over-subscribed by people with 501hrs on the Airbus.

I read recently that people in the Far East are turning away from the career. Unsociable hours, endless 4-6 sector days, minimum rest, and so on will lead those with decent ambition and intelligence to look for something else to do with their future.

I did recently meet a F/O from a major low cost carrier in the UK who genuinely admitted that they are considering leaving to take up a graduate trainee position in another industry; a career changer after 18 months! I suspect they are not alone.

Ridiculous really isnt it - here we have people who are put in charge of 200 lives and millions of pounds worth of machine, all day, and are paid less than a PA or office staff ....

Hello everyone,

I confirm the salary...

It is a great company, nice people, good and professional atmosphere in the cockpit, stable roster. It is such a shame that it is all ruined by the salaries...

At the end of the day, whether we fly A320 or anything else with some wings and engines, it all comes to the lifestyle we can secure. In most cases lifestyle is directly proportional to the salary.

Good luck guys!

Imagine a couple of 18 year olds leaving school. The first spends 100,000 euros and 3 years on flying school and some P2F scheme, then takes up this contract at 20,000 euro pa. The second goes and gets a job flipping burgers in McDonalds at 10,000 euro pa.

On that salary it would take 16 years for the pilot to equal the net income of the burger flipper.

Now I know there are a lot of ifs, buts and variables and the pilot would have taken his command with a pay rise, etc. etc. but still that's a pretty shocking salary for an airline pilot.

It's not the pay which is the real problem - The problem is the airline doing the recruitment. On the face of it, the numbers may look excellent to the company, but like one of Blair's crappy PFI schemes, the liability in human terms is "off balance sheet."This because I'll suggest that the suckers to sign up to this will have debts they can barely afford, families they can not repay and living expenses they can not meet. To make ends meet they either do a second job, live in the back of a car or scurry around in a "crash pad' like a rat. Either way, it unlikely a pilot paid as little as this will be properly fed, rested or have a positive attitude when they turn up for work. The price will be paid ultimately by the employer in a either a sick employee, one who (quite reasonably) runs without notice for a better job or worst of all, one who is not capable of performing correctly at a time when he really has to. You can imagine the consequences for yourselves.

PM

PS: How about filling up the scumbag recruiters mailbox? I'm applying right now!

Regrets...

I have an A320 rating and genuinely regret it. It was a foolish thing to do with no solid job offer, but I was straight out of flight school and unfortunately fell for the bull**** and the sales pitch.

I am fortunately flying right now, but not on an A320 and no sight of a job on one anytime soon. Becoming a pilot has allowed me to do some amazing things, live some fantastic places and meet great people. However I feel I have entered this industry 20 years too late with the terms and conditions on offer nowadays...

I'm too stubborn to change paths now and I'll hopefully look back in 30 years and say I made the right career choice. And if not? I'll put the lessons I learned in the Caribbean to good use and hit the rum

I read that this is 20 000-25 000€ + Sector pay + 8% allowance ..

So that means that it is 20 000€ the basic but you have an "extra" XX€ each time you fly..?

Anyone know how much they pay this "sector pay"?

Vsnake,

€20,000 basic sounds about correct.

Sector pay for FO/SFO is: €30 short, €33 medium, €36 long sector.

8% added to both basic and sector pay to achieve total gross pay.

If you are asked to work a day off, you will receive one short sector extra pay - i.e. an extra €30 for saving the programme. You won't get your day off back, unless it is a minimum legal day off.

Somewhere in the order of €3000 a month, BEFORE tax, social security, personal pension contributions, private healthcare, debt repayments etc etc.

Hope that makes sense.

Ok, thank you for the response.
I just notice it is a SECTOR pay not an hourly rate. So if we want to hit the 3000€ before tax we have to fly 46 short sectors.. it sounds HUGE!!!
