Are Flybe about to open recruitment?

Having just received, like, I am sure, many others, an email asking me to update my profile on the Flybe online application site, I am pondering the above question.

Any rumours as to whether recruiting is about to start, or whether this is simply a purging of the system?

Next obvious question: if they start recruiting, who for? Cadets? Type rated? Experienced non TR? DEC?

As Lineup N Wait says, it would be for FOs onto the Q400. No DEC recruitment for a long time I wouldn't imagine. Flybe take on any level of experience from cadet upwards and so anybody is free to apply and there is no bias toward low hours people (as far as DEPs are concerned).

Thanks for the replies. Is the constant trickle to which you refer a similar mix of experience or just mpl cadets?

I was told by a well-connected colleague that we have a requirement for F/Os at short notice that precludes some in the hold pool (3 months' required with their current employers) and that would likely trigger some guys to be called.

I'd expect recruitment to pick up soonish as, despite the economy, several senior F/Os (both fleets) and junior skippers (mostly Dash) are bound for pastures new.

Cadet recruitment has been constant for a number of years now, for both CPL and MPL courses. There has been a very small amount of DE FO recruitment for specific vacancies and there will continue to be a small amount more, so far for experienced crew or ex-mil.

Holding pools will be refreshed periodically as potential candidates' availability and details change for a number of reasons.

There's more recruitment happening than that. It is first through the recommendation system attached to the Flybe affiliated flight schools, all pre-command sim assessments not in the system are to be postponed due to forward sim availability. 4 airframes need crewing, and we are already about 20-30 F/Os short. 4 airframes will equate to about 18 f/o's and 18 captains. This means 36 f/o's if they upgrade the captain slots. I heard numbers are unknown at present but it's going to be slightly more than a trickle.

Just out of interest, who exaclty are they recruiting?

Is it all MPL / mentored cadets or is there a secret way in for normal people?

Only a few posts up it states where they are looking to get their pilots from initially. Surely you don't want me to repeat it?

Thanks Arctic Monkey.

I was really looking to see if they were recruiting 'normal' people ie instructors who don't know the right people.

Any one else want to answer who's not bored and smug?

Hilarious EK, just hilarious.

My statement said it all. Recommendations first from affiliated flight schools. That might fill the numbers required, it might not. If it doesn't then of course everyone else will be in with a shout.

As a former FI of one of the aforementioned FTOs and a short-lived colleague of a former BE's top-brass I can tell you that, despite their best efforts, the operator in question (management pilot's own words, sitting at the recruitment board...) was hardly able to fill its requirements using us and other schools. This was a while ago but not an ice-age away.

Will history repeat itself? I have received that email as well so guess where my money is...

Fings I av seen from where I sit
  • Some experienced BI guys have been given interview. More than likely for a CI base than anything else.
  • FO numbers are down about 20 bodies from a few years ago with no real change in fleet size.
  • Up until about a year ago, most FO's (and junior Cpts) didn't meet the minimum's for the Middle East. Thats all starting to change and people are starting to disappear off to play in the sand.
  • BE picked up a few old BMi Baby routes.
  • Wildly rumoured takeover of KLM/AF regional routes into the UK.
  • Even more wildly rumoured takeover of BACF after the Olympics.

All in all, not surprised Flybe keen to start building up a hold pool.

Seems to be a mix of experience

Flybe seem to be taking a mix of experience in their current intake - some cadet and also some with considerable turboprop and even jet experience which is I think to their credit.

It's been my experience that Flybe are one of the few airlines who really don't give a toss what age you are as long as you are committed - I personally know of one Direct entry Captain who joined at 62 and I applaud them for that.

The huge mix of experience is one of the airline's strengths, I've learned a lot flying with people younger and older than myself, the training is first rate - indeed it couldn't be better, the aircraft are new and the Dash is a superb entry to commercial flying before moving on to one of those lovely E-jets or on to an Airbus or Boeing. They also pay all your training and accom and the flight deck is generally a relaxed and friendly work environment.

Good news that they are hiring and Monarch opening their doors will only increase Flybe's demand for pilots in the medium term.

Quite possible you would be a person of interest, however only way
in would be as f/o, and probably at a far flung UK base.
Only way to apply is on line, make sure you use the standard
trigger words to get through the auto shredder
