MOG

Well Virgin won't have to go far to find more 787 rated pilots, I would guess that climbing the stairs in Atlantic house would prove fruitful.

I beg to differ, They already screamed out for 777/787 guys and obviously got nothing... Hopefully sooner rather then later they realise that they need to widen the goal posts and cough up for a type rating like all proper airlines should!

Chase it, I don't think the cost of a type rating was the issue. Virgin have never been tight in that respect. I think the requirement was for 'oven ready' 777 and ideally 787 pilots who would obviously have a much shorter time to come on line. There are plenty of pilots within Virgin who would wish to transfer to the 787 fleet, but even a transfer from the 747 would entail a longer conversion/ line training than a rated 787 pilot from another airline.

They have / had a holding pool of experienced guys interviewed 2 years ago for FO positions. they could've easily been typed on the 78 but were left to pursue other opportunities. Are you sure it's not about money because it certainly looks that way to me. VS is a very good employer and seemingly a happy bunch but the new management dawn is upon them. They are cost cutting like Ryanair on steroids. So far only the flight crew have escaped but they can't hide forever. I'm surprised they haven't invited people go buy a 787 rating. Watch that space next

Do you mean the same space that Easyjet are occupying? They are asking experienced non rated DECs and DEFOs to pay for an Airbus rating.

And I know from experience that as well as asking for the rating costs, they have offered a flexi crew non permanent contract.

Sorry Thad I don't agree that Virgin Atlantic are in this category.

If you had any real insight into the company and their future deliveries you would realise exactly why they are concentrating on rated guys and girls at the moment.

I didn't say they were in the same catagory as easy and I don't condone easy's recruitment policy but they're definitely heading towards the same page. As for the delivery schedule.. pretty sure BA have more challenges on that front yet they continue to hire non rated. Requirement for ratings smacks of only 2 possibilities 1) cost cutting 2) total cock up of the establishment plan. Or perhaps both. In the land of orange the latter usually applies

I got the same email as everyone else it seems. I wonder did anyone get a PFO at this point?

Additionally, I agree with Thad. I'm not sure how Manual Reversion can argue they want 'oven ready' type rated guys without conceding that costs are obviously part of this requirement. How can you have people interviewed two years ago who couldn't have been oven ready by now with a bit of planning and if costs were no issue? You could have taken a PPL holder from two years ago and he'd be 787 oven ready now!

Regarding zerotohero, I have to admit, applying to Virgin took all of 30 minutes, uploading a CV/cover letter and filling out your personal details. Compared to BA and every other airline I've ever applied to, I'd say Virgin took the least time, so I find it hard to quantify how much effort you actually saved by not applying and the mindset you have in basically giving up. I've failed BA 3 times now, but will give it a 4th go in 10 months or so..

BA recruit pilots, not ratings.

VA , strictly want a 787 rating, NOT 777. The rating speaks louder than ability.

Therefore BA have the most capable pilots. Period.

Oh well, here marks the end of a useful thread.

Period!

How many pages of collective measuring of "stick and berries" must we endure now?

And you are an example of this.

I'm ex BA and I recollect at the time of the Dan takeover, those who were not qualified on the right kind of B737 were not offered employment.
Can't say I felt proud of my company about that.

And what about the A320 rated hold poolers in BA who meet the long haul hour and weight requirements who have been overlooked for long haul slots (especially onto the A380 which would only require a 12 day conversion course) in favour of type rated candidates from Emirates etc? And if this is not going on then why are they conducting roadshows in Dubai?

I suspect the many 777-rated out there are also a (possibly bigger) factor in this. Proving that even in BA the Type Rating is now King.

Oh nice one High five, very mature.

Back on topic.

The reason VS are looking for rated guys, as has been said time and time again, is because they want them on the line with quickly only doing an operator conversion course, not a full TR. If VS had the time to do full TR courses, they wouldn't be looking outside for direct entry 787 guys at this time.

Not entirely true but we're talking a couple of people who've achieved such a position which, given the fact there are way more vacancies than that, proves it's the overwhelming exception rather than the rule.

But anyway this thread is about Virgin and my post was purely intended to highlight the fact that, despite assertions to the contrary recently in the thread, BA are just as interested in seeking type rated candidates as Virgin seem to be at the moment.

I'm 320 rated and have to do full TR on 380 at BA, same as the other 3 people I know who are on the course. So wouldn't say TR is king.

That shouldn't be necessary because as far as Airbus are concerned it's just a CCQ. Maybe it's a BA thing.

Permafrost, be under no illusions that you are the exception rather than the rule. You have been very lucky (and I am very jealous). There are loads of hold poolers with the requirements for long haul who have been told they're not going to get the slots, whilst the company go the whole hog with roadshows in Hong Kong and Dubai looking for Type Rated candidates from Cathay, Emirates and the like. The reasons for this can be debated (short haul in desperate need of bodies) but that is clear proof that the Type Rating is currently favoured above all else. Virgin are no different, as are any other company in this day and age.

Anyway how did this become a conversation about BA? Back to Virgin...
