BA will tell you what aircraft (and hence base) you're on when they call you to offer you a contract/start date. You get paid your basic from the day you join (although not in advance, at the end of the month as per normal). There are some allowances to be claimed (can't remember what) but they definitely won't be anything like your normal monthly variable pay. Basic monthly gross pay on shorthaul & longhaul PP1 is approx £4100.

Pre-2006 the head of pilot recruitment said they needed to 'get 5 years out of a pilot' to make it worth their while, so even back then a mid 40s applicant would have been fine. There are a great number of silver haired 2 stripers milling around, which I think proves they won't discriminate based on age. Good luck!

It'll be interesting to see if they get enough TR'd 747 applicants to meet the demand. 20-30 required, 1/10 pass rate for selection - my calculator tells me they'll need 200-300 applicants. Where will they come from?

I see what you say BusDriverLHR. It seems unimaginable that their are 200-300 odd 744 rated (and current) applicants out there. Yet I find it strange that BA are recruiting directly to the 747. I thought there would have been a lot of internal competition; which there probably is. Yet a fresh 744 rating (with a base check to boot) is a pretty large cost at the end of the day.

The problem is that the training department is getting maxed out.

I understand that the company has satisfied all internal bids for the P2 on the 744. They have even let some guys move before their engagement freeze has expired (i.e. within 5 yrs of joining). The next phase would be to let some move before their equipment freeze has expired (i.e 4yrs on type). Company does not want to do that as that would mean 2 lots of training (one course on the 744 and another on the A320 for their replacement). By going directly for those with a type rating they only have to do the one 744 course

Re the company not meeting its requirement for direct entry Airbus drivers.

I find operating out of T5 very pleasant in-part because my colleague and I invariably place the same emphasis on verbalising threat awareness, SA, gottchas etc etc all in the context of having a laugh as we go.

Given that they were swamped with bona fide applications from all over the world it must have been tempting for them to alter their entry requirements just to make the numbers work.

That they didnt do this, I take to mean the selection process remains as watertight as is poss and that those who get through share the BA mindset. Its NOT better, its just different and difficult to put into words.

The questions asked in the intial letter dictated who got the first interviews/sims and who the HR department considered most suitable. Hence the highest proportion of 'passes' was expected at the start and then to gradually decline. From what I know the pass rates have been quite high but still many falling at the sim stage and that proportion of failures is also expected to increase.

Thus, irrespective of the number of applicants, the number of 'suitable' (great HR word!) successful applicants is expected to decrease over time so to keep options open and the standards to the required level the taps have been opened again.

It's a tough world but, at the moment, the airline can pick and choose.

Good luck.

I take it that all the positions for the 737 are filled by now?

No Sponsor beat me to the question. I'm 737 rated with a selection day booked in April. Any word on whether 73 guys are still getting through to start in the very near future or is it a swim in the pool for them?

I may be wrong (quite often are) but I thought that this second advert is for additional pilots over and above the original 80. Those 80 were 737/320 and the process is still going on. This second group will increase the total number but only on the 320 and additionally a new requirement for the 744.

The original requirement was for 80/90 pilots but this was later increased to about 140. We are looking at 20/30 747 DEPs so you could guess around 30 more Airbus recruits needed?

I assume if you applied in Nov and didn't get an interview, you're ineligible for this round of recruitment?

"Should you wish to re-apply for a similar position again in the future, please note we cannot accept another application within one year. "

What about the B777? Do medium haul BA pilots choose the B777 over the Jumbo which would explain why the DEP positions are all on the Jumbo?
Also can any one tell me how much time you have to wait for if you fail at Day1 or Sim assessment?

Thanks

If you fail either at the interview day or the sim, you can not reapply until 1 year after the day you went for the interview.

Just guessing:

BA has brought some 744 airframes back from the desert, so extra pilots needed on the Fleet?

Change at the top of the 744 seniority list - it's generally a more senior/older fleet than the 777, maybe some of the very senior 744 pilots are going part time or even leaving, more so than on the 777?

What about the B777?
There is no DEP recruitment onto the 777 at this time. BA have more than enough unfrozen pilots aspiring to the 777 so all slots have been filled internally.

For a good number of years in BA the 744 has been the premium fleet where the most senior pilots migrate to. The last couple of years has seen shift towards the 777, so some of those 744 vacancies have been created by existing 744 pilots moving to the 777.

Interesting, 320 or 744(!?) rated only. That'll be some vacancies at ez coming up then. Can't see where else all those 320 rated bods are coming from

At my day 1 there was a wide selection of people from Qatar, Astraeus, Tiger, BMI, and Monarch. Mind you, that was back in December. If 1500 have indeed failed, then surely the supply of suitable rated 320 individuals must run dry reasonably soon? Vacancies at Easy Jet will just be filled with CTC cadets.

I presume the 744 rated people will be from GSS, Cargo Lux, ACG, Air Atlanta, Virgin, plus all the Europeans working for the likes of Jade and Air China. Easy to get 200-300 applicants for that, one would have thought.

If you fail any part of the selection process (including not progressing from application form to Day 1) you can't fill out another application for 11 months, and you must not attend another day 1 until 12 months has elapsed.
