EFIS, glass and semi-glass cockpits

Can someone please explain the difference between glass and semi-glass cockpits and what CRT displays are required in a semi-glass layout for it to be labelled EFIS?

Cheers.

Ok here's a basic defenition. A "semi-glass" cockpit is one where there is very limited amount of ECAS used- examples being the 737-300/MD-80/757 in which usually the centre engine instruments and altimeter/airspeed indictor are analogue but there is an EHSI and EADI used( that is an EFS attitude indicator and an EFIS horizontal situatio idicator). A full glas cockpit- as on the A320/330/340/747-400/MD-11/777 have all the flight instruments as EFIS and no analogue dias are used whatsoever.
Hope this helps

just as an add-on to my above post many airlines are now refitting older airplanes like the DC-8/727/747-100 with EFIS

Thanks. I was under the impression that the 757/767 cockpit was fitted with EICAS hence not analogue engine instruments.

By the way I am looking for as technical answer as possible - any takers?

I have just started studying instruments at ATPL level and am trying to find out information ahead of the class.

You are indeed correct x-wind - the 757 and 767 have two centrally-located CRT's for the EICAS.

Jim lovell 30th May 2001 14:30

you're right about the 757- sorry my mistake

On the 757/767 the airspeed indicator and the altimeter are analogue.

p.s. for the instruments ATPL exam from memory I think that they concentrate more on how a CRT (for example) works rather than the various definitions of what makes up a glass cockpit

Flight Safety 31st May 2001 23:10

Spoilers Yellow, I think you're referring to the standby instruments aren't you?

Crosswind Limits 1st June 2001 02:10

Spoilers Yellow,

I think you are correct about the ATPL instruments thoery side of things but I was just curious anyway. I guess I will have to wait until next year or the year after for the real fun to begin! :)

Cheers.

Flight Safety, the ASI and altimeter are analogue, in both B767 and B757.

Since it was early days for glass cockpit's, I don't think they wanted to be too radical.

"the ASI and altimeter are analogue, in both B767 and B757"

Except for the B767-400 which I think is a replica of the B777 flight deck.

Crosswinds,
I'm as un-technical as they get but you might try this web sight. www.bluecoat.org.

Iz 9th June 2001 17:37

We have a speed tape on the EADI on our 757s, there are companies that have removed the analog airspeed indicator on their 757/767s.

E. MORSE 9th June 2001 21:45

Yep Iz is also right.
I also flew the 767 without the conventional ASI ,with speedtape installed.
It is up to the company really.
Without the conv. ASI requires less maintenance that is.
Ofcourse there's always the SBY ASI however.

cheers lads
