Speedbrakes / Go Around

Just a quick question about going around in an airliner...

It's quite likely in a go-around situation (obstacle on the runway etc) that you will touch the ground with the main gear, which will deploy the spoilers. Do they retract automatically upon application of TOGA power or do you have to do it yourself?

I would have thought that any delay in getting them in would leave you in deep doodoo on a short runway?

On the Avro RJ100 it's automatic, but you back it up with manual selection to make sure.

When we do touch and go's for training we switch the automatic deployment system off so we can get going straight away.

On the 757, they retract automatically -- even if you bounce upon landing, they will retract momentarily.

Same on Airbus - don't think they auto retract on a bounce though - TOGA selection does it.

Black_Dawn 24th May 2001 20:24

In the MD82 is automatic:the advancing throttles do the job of retracting the spoilers.

Lightoff 24th May 2001 20:48

On the CRJ and also on the 767 (suppose most other Boeings as well), the spoiler deploy logic requires BOTH thrust levers to be at idle for ground spoilers to deploy - so in your scenario they would never deploy in the first place with G/A thrust set before the momentary touchdown.

SLT correct on airbus bounce, with rear main- wheel rotation in excess of 50kts the 'logic' will keep them locked out.

dito F100 TOGA pops them back in.

Cough 24th May 2001 23:25

737 - Touch the RH wheel, they deploy on landing. Apply power, and they will retract. (No effect on a bounce)

CCCoooo....ugh

Bit different on the DC9-30. Spoiler retracted after deployment on touchdown if the LEFT thrust lever was advanced. If doing a go around close to the ground with momentary wheel contact and using RIGHT engine with LEFT thrust lever at idle it was necessary to manually release the spoiler handle. Simple enough, just tap the handle down and the spoiler lever flew to the stowed position. BUT you needed to be prepared to act smartly.

On the bus, I believe it depends on what ELAC mod you have. I think you have to have the 88mod.

On b727 that we fly, the speedbrakes/gr.spoilers will retract at forward motion of the thrust levers.
