Jet Engine theory books
 

Can anyone suggest a good jet engine or gas turbine theory book? I'm not thinking a basic book, but one at the intermediate to advanced level, probably undergraduate, with formulas, technical explanations and drawings, but not really of the pictorial nature.

In the past, I've heard that Rolls Royce put a good one out, and more specifically, I've seem to remember Pratt and Whitney had one called "Gas Turbine Engine", but I don't know if either is of the detail I'm interested.

Can anyone provide titles/authors of one(s) they like?

I'm out of the engine business these days, but I would certainly recommend both the Rolls Royce and Pratt & Whitney books at the very least. Neither are text books per se but invaluable and cover much of the ground you want.

I seem to recall a proper text book but it's name escapes me.

You can take a look at Jet Engines - Fundamentals of theory, design and operation By Klaus Hünecke

Mine is published be Motorbooks International Publishers & Wholesalers in 1997 (reprinted 1998 and 2000) in the States (bought at Barnes & Nobel) but has also been previously pubilshed in the UK by Airlife Publishing Ltd.

For a college level book I would recommend J. Kerrebrock "Aircraft Engines and Gas Turbines", Second Edition.
Besides the usual Aerothermodynamics stuff it includes also engine structures and noise. It's available through amazon where you can read sample pages

The Pratt and RR books are very good but don't have equations and are only descriptive aimed perhaps to Aviation maintenance and operations personel jet engine familiarization courses.

Are the P&W "The Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine and it's Operation" and RR "The Jet Engine" books commercially available? I once got them through engine representatives but I don't have them anymore.

I've got the Rolls book and it is very good, simple explanations with some super pictures.......if you like that kindathing!:O

Rolls Royce book is excellent.

If you have a couple of classmates, devote half a day and go through the first 70 odd pages disecting each and every sentence and asking each other questions about it. Why? so what if...? etc.

I did it with 2 others and have nary forgotten anything 8 years later and I dont fly jets.
