Icom IC-R2
 

Hi. I think this is the correct forum to post in.

I have a scanner/reciever and it is called Icom IC - R2. The aerial that came with it is ok, and I can get as far as brest control from my home in Surrey. However, I remember a few years back, that Fairoaks flight Center had a scanner in the Transair Pilot Shop, and it would pick up a massive area due to a big extension aerial they had stuck to the side of the building!! I called them today, and they do not sell the extension aerial that I am after anymore.

The attachment I need is a fine pin like wired attachment to fit in the pin-hole size hole in the scanner. Possibly most people know what im talking about :confused:

I have tried a few places in Addlestone, Weybridge, but cannot find somewhere with the small enough connection. It is like the one in the back of my NTL Home digital Set-top box, but the size down from that.

I ran a search on the Icom site, and they do not sell the extension aerials to the best of my knowledge.

If anyone can help and tell me where to get one from, I would be very greatful. Also cost perhaps?

Think the connection you are after is a female BNC connector to mate with your scanner.

A good electronics shop such as maplin electronics have these.

I have just found this. If you look at the bottom under "options" it describes the adapter I am looking for I think. I shall look for that in the link you kindly provided :)

Most scanners do use a BNC connector, but the IC-R2 (little portable unit about the size of a pack of cigarettes) uses a connector called SMA. You can get an SMA-BNC adaptor at most amateur radio stores or websites or from ICOM, and then connect most aerials which typically are BNC.

A little follow up - I have a Realistic Pro 2004 ( same sort of coverage as the Icom but non-portable). For a permanent, internal installation I made a discone aerial to a pattern published in a magazine some time ago. Very simple to make - a sheet of card (A1) some kitchen foil and some co-ax to a BNC. Very wide band - 100Mhz to 1000 Mhz.
The same article gave instructions for an external version which was almost as easy.
