MD80 ARTs SYSTEM ??
How does the controls for the MD80 ARTs system function. Specifically, if a pilot wants to disable or enable how do the buttons work? Are they push style, turn style or just pop the breaker, etc??
Thanks much.:) |
Free from memory, its been two years since I was on the MD80!
Its a garded good old fashioned flick switch. In short ART can detect an engine failure and will then increase thrust on the operating engine. To enable system sevaral requirements has to be met: Aircaraft on ground and idle power ART switch to auto Slats extended The ART system will arm when throttles are moved above about 60 to 65%N1 I forgot the exact number. To disable flick switch off or retract slats. |
Just to be more specific: the Automatic Reserve Thrust (ART), combines features of the digital flight guidance and the JT8D-217 engine fuel control unit (FCU).
When the ART system detects a 30.2% differential in N1 rpm-( this is not the only condition that actuates the system)- thrust is increased, whithout throttle movement, by the opening of a solenoid-operated fuel valve in the FCU. The system is armed at 64% N1. The toggle switch has Auto/Inop position and is located on the central instrument panel, under a red metal cover. BD |
Works on the JT8D-219 also ;)

The ART system adds 850 # of thrust. It can also be actuated by switching DFGC computers. This is a standard procedure for high altitude airport departures with a full load.(Denver bump)

Hi avmech
you wrote: It can also be actuated by switching DFGC computers. This is a standard procedure for high altitude airport departures with a full load Now this standard procedure is new to me! What i've understood there's someone using the switching of the DFGC, to obtain max thrust during take-off. What i know is that you can obtain max thrust, during take off and climb-out, by switching the ART system to INOP and then selecting TO mode on the TRP panel. This is done normally at the end of the final cockpit checklist ( when you decide which kind of thrust you want: MAX-Normal-Flex). BD |
I'd love to see where this one leads ...any other mac-drivers out there want to comment?
Hmmmm, Tcas climb... 2 years..-219's, you wouldn't happen to be ex-FQ would ya?............. Just dug the manuals out....the 850lbs increase are for the 217's and variants(217A,217C), and the big guns (219's) you get a 700lbs increase when the ART fires( there's a more technical description available but KISS) for a total of 21,700lbs. |
What is a FQ?
Extra words here to qualify this post. |
FQ
could be the IATA code of an airline company, but now extinct:( BD |
Yes, FQ is the Iata code for that airline(definitely extinct).
