B767 Circling Approach "Techniques"
It's been a minute or two since I flew the type in another life.
If doing a circling approach the procedure was to push the GA switch at minimums immediately followed by pressing ALT HOLD. It was all about getting into another FMA mode (I think...). If this technique sounds familiar can anybody explain the concept? |
Didn't we fly the approach in VS, with MCP set at the CAM? GA/ALT HOLD is really useful on ILS if initiating a GA above the MAA
|
If you are fully coupled the only way to get off the ILS is to either (a) press GA and immediately Alt Hold or (b) disconnect the AP and recycle both FDs which is a bit of a faff...
The easiest way as mentioned is to fly the approach in LOC/VS then just reduce VS to zero at the circling altitude and turn towards the downwind. *using one of the above techniques when you screw it up and accidentally arm approach anyway |
Phew. It's less than 18 months since I stopped doing this and already I'm forgetting! Also always using VS means that any non ILS approach is also catered for (although using VNAV if appropriate would also work).
