320 Go around Query
Hi all, hope you are all well.
Low hour 320 pilot here with a question that I can't seem to find the answer to.... In the event that a go-around is initiated when you are already above the respective thr red/ acc alt's.. what is the trigger for LVR CLB to flash.... There is a safety first magazine from airbus (cant link due to being a new user) that suggests that LVR CLB flashes as a result of ALT* in this scenario, but I'm unsure if it's the logic of ALT* which has triggered LVR CLB.. or the fact that the FMGS has just detected that you are already above the thr red/acc so it's just requested LVR CLB more or less straight away after initiating the go around. So essentially if we just assume the GA THR red / acc is 1500ft each... if I go around at 2000ft... and the go around alt is 6000ft... will it flash LVR CLB imminently or will it wait until alt*? Any help is appreciated.. |
It will flash LVR CLB shortly after reaching MAN TOGA and transitioning into the go-around FMS phase if you are above thrust reduction altitude.
In fact did an ATC-directed intermediate altitude go-around from about 3000 feet a few weeks ago. Brought thrust levers to TOGA then immediately two clicks back to CLB, and did indeed see LVR CLB flash however briefly during the transition. ALT* will also trigger LVR CLB if it engages prior to thrust reduction altitude, such as is likely to see in a visual circuit. |

Also consider that MAN TOGA and MAN FLEX will result in rated thrust without modulation by Autothrust - ATHR is blue for a reason in the rightmost FMA window in this situation. When You level off, You do not want an uncontrolled acceleration past all limiting speeds, so either fly manually or get ATHR active. Moving the thrust levers from the forward detents to CLB is a simple necessity with ALT*.

In takeoff and GA phase LVR CLB is connected with THR RED ALT and since AC is already above it's not going to appear through GA phase logic but it will appear through normal ALT* logic.

Further question on this then if your GA accel alt is 2000 and you initiate a go around at 2500. does this mean you’ll stay in SRS until ALT* at the go around alt or will it transition to OP CLB at any point prior just curious |
