B748 demand pumps
 
Not sure if the hydraulic demand pumps can operate the gear and flaps normally without the engine driven pumps.

Yes they can, it’s just slower.

You can have either the EDP or the DEM pump Inoperative as per the MEL.

Since they are designed to take the full load after engine shutdown with a fire switch, it poses no problem at all. Neither in the 744. You can eve dispatch with the pump removed alltogether.

Demand Pumps are used to do many maintenance functions including flap operation, gear retractions etc.
