Pans ops hold entry timing
Slightly obscure question if I may, as I'm unsure how the PANS-OPS criteria is applied.
Holding entry timing - PARALLEL / TEARDROP (OFFSET). If I begin timing after passing the FIX during the entry for 1 minute, the aircraft in most cases is only just achieving the outbound (PARALLEL/OFFSET) track before requring a turn inbound to intecept the inbound HOLD BEARING/RADIAL which allows very little time to pick up the inbound track of the HOLD. I cannot find reference for a longer entry timing for CAT D aircraft however. Would appreciate advice on this... |
There are no timings specifically for Cat C or D aircraft, only maximum IAS dependent on altitude. Note that above 14000ft, the standard hold time increases to 1.5 min.
Individual states can design and specify their own speed and timing parameters, if required. |
It's been a loooong time since I did this manually. How about waiting with the timing until you're (more or less) facing outbound on the first entry leg? It's not an exact science.

You only time after you’ve completed the turn (parallel entry) or established the outbound track (teardrop).

I've always found it best to select the HOLD in the FMC / FMGS, execute it, and not worry about PANS-OPS :-)

Well, its not an exact science getting into the hold, you will basically have to guess a rough correction both drift and timings as you are setting up getting into the hold. You are not required to take up the outbound track until established (as in, crossed the fix, after you are done dorking around getting into position) but you can already take a guess and subtract/add seconds needed depending on your groundspeed.
