LVL CHG doesn't respect altitude constraints does it? (Genuine question, I'm not a B pilot). I'd personally be most comfortable using all the same modes I usually would and just control the thrust as required. Then only one thing is different, manual thrust, and I've been dealing with manual thrust most of my career so no big deal.

IIRC, the 737 actually has (low)speed protection in V/S mode and won't stall.
Not sure about high speed protection though. |
The original question is made due to the lack of info about recomended modes for a Autothrottle inoperative take off. For Boeing 767 there’s is not a supplementary or bulletin regarding this. What I do is at 400’ HDG or LNAV, at acceleration altitude, ask for Climb Power in TMC, Speed at CMS or 250 kts, clean up flaps, and then flight level change or VNAV (maybe it will engage in VNAV SPEED), then Autopilot and climb with 10° pitch…..FCOM does not say too much about VNAV or its relationship with Autothrottle
