B 737 NG Overwing exits

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I flew the NG and a colleague posed the following question to me recently that I need some help with.

From memory, the overwing exits were locked closed from setting takeoff thrust to weight on wheels at landing.

What enables the overwing exits to be opened in a ditching then ?
(As the weight on wheels switch will not have been activated in a ditching).

Also, can these exits be opened from the outside after a ditching ?

Any official references would be appreciated.

Yes, they can be opened from the outside, happened even during a deicing before take off on one of ours by the deicing boom.

The overwing emergency exits lock when:

• three of the four Entry/Service doors are closed and
• either engine is running and
• the airplane air/ground logic indicates that the airplane is in the air or both thrust levers are advanced.

The overwing emergency exits unlock when any one of the above conditions is not met or DC power is lost.

From my (slightly older) FCOM.
