Real time winds of the Earth

Very interesting super-computer simulation of the last 24 hours of winds. Seems relevant to aviation.

Nifty for sure

"Magnifique " !

Thanks.

"Wonderful" !

Thanks.

Date ? Time ? What with that polar vortex now ?

Sir Richard 11th January 2014 20:25

It is worth reading this page about earth to see which levels can be computed and displayed. Jet-Stream at 250 mb for example (sorry..250 hPa)

underfire 12th January 2014 09:49

roulish,

If you 'pick' a certain spot on the map. You get this.

http://i41.tinypic.com/149uz36.jpg

then click on 'earth'. you get this:

http://i40.tinypic.com/t516xf.jpg

there are controls for time (now, local, UTC) and height (by hPa)

Enjoy! :ok:

Edit: the 'projections' click is interesting as well..

Edit 2: to get rid of the boxes, click the 'x' , then the 'earth'

Thank you underfire, I shall try and play many combinations! I would like to identify the famous "polar vortex" over N-E USA january 6. 2014 which lets me frustrated.
Is that map synoptic observation, or a forecast (the word "simulation" opens that possibility that it is only a representation technic that you can use aswelll for observations and forecasts)?

737Jock 12th January 2014 10:05

Really cool!

I had the great honour and pleasure to have a Medaille Fields math teacher, Renι Thom, inventing the nick-named " theory des catastrophes" (official name : "thιorie de la morphogιnθse"). After his lectures I felt to have been walking in a wonderland . We sensed the n-dimension worlds, there was NO abstraction with him. The choice of this words was very accurate, connected to real life experiences and sure definitions. That wind representation is from that kind of feeling. Since Mandelbrot shapes I did not see so surprising and realistic walk in the magic math world .

rou,

Yes, with the date/time feature, you can go back to that day, and choose the different altitudes, enjoy!

roulishollandais 12th January 2014 20:54

Yes underfire, I played an-hour-long and showed the moving pictures to everybody around me l, they said ah, oh!

I changed projection, liked to turn the earth in all direction in O projection, tried all the other projections, traveled without fuel through all the levels, could see Concorde under my level, from North pole to South pole via the very cold air of jan6.vortex and australiansummer, watching new stars, and meeting other ppruners on the way (hello, did you see me?)
I changed the date with the double arrow, the time with the single arrow, came back to "now", I revised my geography, and thought to the folks happy or unhappy around the little earth, I landed with the little green circle pointed where my best friends and family are living, printed, sent by mail the link and pictures.:ok:

science is well when well done.

How did you found that link?Diid you work at that program?

underfire 13th January 2014 02:34

I just found it by accident. The different levels, straems, and by clicking, the estimated spped...hopefully, whoever is funding it keeps going!

Enjoy :ok:

roulishollandais 18th January 2014 15:40

I was just watching previsions for the 22. january. (The 23. it is said "no data")
Now we have wind, temperature,Total precipitation, Cloud precipitation, Pressure.

Source | GFS / NCEP / US National Weather Service
Control | Now « – ‹ – › – » 〖◯〗
Height | Sfc – 1000 – 850 – 700 – 500 – 250 – 70 – 10 hPa
Overlay | None – Wind – Temp – TPW – TCW – MSLP
Projection | A – AE – CE – E – O – S – WB – W3

ocean

.Wonderful site, now with ocean currents, and many new options.
But sad to show the MH370 missing region. May it be useful.
