cf34-3b turbofan engine
Hi
for the gurus out there i was just wondering if the name CF34-3B of the turbofan engines powering the CL604-605 amongst others, has a meaning. Baobab |
The CF34 engine designation stands for commercial fan. The engine itself was originally designed for military operations (Warthog, etc.) and was designated as the TF34 (turbo-fan) at that time. CF was the way GE identified their commercial fan engines up until the GE90 came along.

cf34
Tubine D, thanks for the explanation, do you have any about the reason why they picked 34? and 3b?
thanks baobab |
do you have any about the reason why they picked 34? and 3b? The "3B" relates to the commercial CF34 engine. The sequence started with the original "3A" engine which powered the Challenger 601 business jet and the Canadair Regional jet. The "3B" designation indicates a change in the engine. It was a variation, an improvement over the "3A", offering an ~3% lower specific fuel consumption resulting in an improved 5-7% operating range for the newer Challenger 604 plus a higher climb rate and shorter high/hot field takeoff capability. |
in awe
thanks turbine
my hat goes off to you! baobab72 note if in the future i have any question about the cf34, do you mind if i will send you a pvt cos you seem yo have an ectensive knowledge of the matter?! |
By the time you get to the Ejets you're up to CF34-8EXX or CF34-10EXX where the E stands for Electronic control i.e. FADEC and the XX indicates the rating of the engine. of which several are available.
the -10 doesn't really share much with the -8 and I'm amazed they called it a CF34. it's a lot closer to the CFM56. |
@FE Hoppy
I don't think the "E" is for Electronic (FADEC) because the -8C5 variants of the CF34 on the CRJ-700 and subs are also FADEC controlled. IIRC, the E, C and D, when it existed, were for Embraer, Canadair and Dornier versions respectively. (there was an -8D3 for a while on the Dorniers) GE now seems to be associating the "A" designator to the Chinese ARJ21 |
@Mad (Flt) Scientist
Thanks, I got my info from an Embraer instructor! Shows how much they know :-) :ok: |
