Beta Zero ?

Hi Guys,

During a recent discussion, the term Beta Zero came up.

During an engine failure on an AIRBUS, the slip slip index will turn into a Beta target, when flaps is out of 0 and not in landing falps config.

Centering the Beta target means the a/c will fly with a sideslip, i.e. most arerodynamically efficient.

However, when we are on Full config, it will go back to BETA ZERO. Meaning Side slip index centered = no side slip.

Any information on Beta Zero ?

Thanks a lot and have a nice weekend.

Cheers,

Beta Target is best suited only for take-off aerodynamics, where roll surfaces are required to be zeroed.

FCTM

From a performance standpoint, the most effective flying technique, in the event of an engine failure at takeoff, is to fly a constant heading with roll surfaces retracted.

During other phases, the regular convention of zeroing sideslip is preferred.

Full Config is inferred as non takeoff phase, and thus sideslip target is zero.
