Built-in Antenna in 777 Tail
 

Hi. I was wondering, what is the built in antenna that runs down the leading edge of the B777s tail? it seems it's in two parts-one on the top most part of the leading edge, the other about 1/3 down and running down the leading edge perhaps two or three metres? I've also noticed the same kind of antenna on 757s and 737s...what is it for?

HF radio antenna

B747-400 is the same. not sure about scarebusses.

Same, most modern large airliners have a HF antenna in that location.

A coupler either in the vertical stab or the rear galley area is then used to electronically adjust the length of the antenna to allow it to tune to different frequencies.

For some unknown reason they weren't painted on Concorde 002.
They are the same on all Concordes, but painted on all the others.

And for the geeks and nerds and boffins among us : they were 'slot' antennas, not the most efficient on HF, so there was a lot of HF current circulating in the tail structure...
