Decision making

Hi,
Is there a commun memory guide that lead you to a good decision after a technical failure, in the UK's airlines?
Thanks

Lots,

D - Diagnosis
O - Options
D - Decide
A - Assign/Act
R - Review (the plan)

G - Gather
R - Review
A - Assess
D - Decide and Do
E - Evaluate

S - Share
A - Analyse
D - Decide
I - Implement
E - Evaluate

And so on.....

Common sense is still permitted in aviation too:ok:

Pff real nonsense. I always love it when they change the decision making model. As if we have been doing it totally wrong the years before..........

This is common in FAA-land at least:

Detect/Define -- what's wrong?
Estimate -- the need for corrective action
Consider -- the alternatives
Identify -- the best alternative
Do -- it
Evalute -- the outcome

or other variants... they basically say the same thing: sit on your hands and think it through before you do something.

Maybe you have enough but here is another one, actually my favourite:

F - Facts
O - Options
R - Risks and benefits
D - Decision
E - Execution
C - Check

FORDEC:ok:

How 'bout:

T - Throttle
F - Feather
M - Mixture
F - Firewall Shutoff
E - Etc.

Takes care of a lot of things. 'Course that's AFTER you DECIDE what to do! With a run-a-way prop though, there isn't much time to decide!:8

S - Situation analysis
P - Preliminary actions
O - Options
R - Risk analysis
D - Decide
E - Execute
C - Check

I don't know who makes these things up but its what my dad called common sense and my RAF instructors called basic Airmanship!

Yes - The SOP's and QRH.

There is a good presentation – ‘Making Better Decisions’, in the library section of Aviation Safety Connection.
Free registration is required, but it’s worth the effort as other presentations on Critical Thinking and Situation Awareness (amongst other materials) should be reviewed before Decision Making
