Delhi RW 29 "PULL UP"

On the ILS, clear night, 500 or so feet, then PULL UP PULL UP.

As visual conditions, ignored.

Question 1) is this normal at this new runway.

Question 2) how does the new runway obstructions get added to the aircraft data base. Is it the Honeywell FMS data base up date discs, if so they are only floppy, not much capacity.

Aircraft GV.

many thanks,

From my company's Delhi briefing notes:

New RWY 11/29 not contained in EGPWS Database.
Crew shud brief for the terrain override switch to be
selected to OVRD as part of the FL100 checks before making
an apch to this rwy. Re-enable EGPWS flw engine shutdown.
Prior to dep fm RWY 11/29 ensure the terrain override
switch is selected to OVRD. During the climb and passing
FL100 re-enable EGPWS.
Hope that helps

Hi Its Windy,

We land on VIDP 29 everyday, it is present in our database and I never turn the terrain off. Please check your EGPWS database, our current database is version 451 and that contains both 29 and 11 in it.

May be your company can issue an internal alert asking pilots to switch off terrain mode when making an approach on runway 29 or 11.

Terrain Database 451 is now available!
Follow the link to the page where database information can be downloaded, including future changes and obstacle information.

Delhi rwy 29 appears to have been added at revision 451. Database update should be free – don’t miss out on free safety. Check the EGPWS version in your aircraft.

See incident 1; Celebrating TAWS ‘Saves’: But lessons still to be learnt. A night visual, straight in approach. Never ignore EGPWS, always pull up, never switch EGPWS off believing that the warning is a database fault unless specifically published – if so then take extra care.

Was it something like the end of this video?

YouTube - Landing to Antalya Intl Airport(Taken by Flight Crew)

LOL. Only an Airbus would tell you to "retard" and "pull up" at the same time.:}

I guess their EGPWS database is old too...

Unless the "pull up" is a gentle reminder to flare. :eek:

PEI_3721 11th November 2008 01:52

Check Airman an interesting video.
The content of the warning and type of voice suggests that the installed equipment is not EGPWS; probably another variant of TAWS (Airbus have an option?).
If this is a ‘valid’ alert, then the aircraft was too low; this is not apparent from the visual scene. Thus, the warning could identify a weakness in the system which should be reported and rectified. Unwarranted alerts challenge crews’ belief in their systems, which could lead to errors as indicated in the “TAWS Saves” paper above.
The commentary suggests that the database was inaccurate, thus another reminder for operators to check for the latest software updates, but not forgetting to report the incident so that other operators and the manufacturers (aircraft and TAWS) are informed a.s.a.p.

LOL. Maybe. But one would think "pull BACK" would have been more appropriate. I guess if you need to be reminded to cut the power, it stands that you may forget to flare too...Airbus logic:confused::}

But hey, what do I know? I'm only a private pilot.

If the runway isn't in the database then it's terrain clearance floor triggering at 700ft RA.
