737 Oleo extension
Done a search to no avail. What is the minimum oleo extension, (mains and nose) required for despatch on the 737?

In our Ops Manual it merely states "not fully compressed". I can't find a simple answer in the engineering instructions (1260 pages) but a graph in there would suggest 6.5cm is in the middle of the normal band. No mention of a minimum, however.

My ruer is that if you can see any shiny metal (the chrome plating) then you are OK. If you look on the leg there is a graph which shows the length against the pressure. Except for a B747 which has pressure gauges, you wont know the pressure unless a tech attaches a gauge for you and measures it. But if you can see shiny metal, the leg hasn't collapsed and will still work.

I guess you could do the Cessna 172 test then, if the oleo is extended more than 3 fingers wide your ok! :ok:

Graph for 737Classic is located on LH side of NLG wheel well for nose and on RH side MLG w/w for main absorbers. Graph attached directly on leg shows tyre pressure relation.

There is a oleo pressure v/s extension chart in the wheel well.One needs to refer to it to get the exact extension.However 3-4 inches of chrome should be adequate with aircraft fully loaded at a transit station.

Empty a/c with 2 to 4 k fuel o/b - 3 to 4 fingures width ie your hand is about right. Fully loaded fuel/pax etc around half of that.

If the Air/Oil mixture is not balanced.ie less fluid then the extension will vary as per load & considerably...Servicing would be needed.
