Tips & hints for Sector Entry

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have any tips or shortcuts of how to workout which sector entry to conduct on a Jeppesen chart when the sector entry boundries are not clearly defined (ie which sector am I in). They are illustrated on the Australian Jeppesen charts, however everywhere else they are not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Check if pattern is L/H or R/H.

Work out your outbound heading.

eg. L/H pattern & outbound heading 200deg.

look at your DI or HSI, draw imaginary line 70deg to the right through the centre. See which sector your outbound heading falls into.

Get an Airbus rating; it's done for you.

People have different ways. Here's my process...

1. Reference your holding fix, calculate your present QDR and range.
1a. Reference groundspeed in nm/min and calculate time to fix.
2. Place grubby fat fingertip on chart at approx your position.
3. Say to self, "Coming from here!"
4. In mind's eye, superimpose the 70deg dividing line which Jepp leave out, and Aerad include.
5. Is it L or R? This should make your type of join clear.
6. Reference again your time to fix, think about your actions after overflying the hold. Downwind 'hack/abeam' QDR? Wind Correctives? Gate position? Radio calls?
7. Bear in mind the wind if its just between one or other sectors. Join is determined by HDG. Within 5deg.

Hope this helps,
