B744 and MD11 runway requirement?
Hello,
I have a problem , the problem is how long the runway needs to be for an MD11 and a B744 in a normal conditions?? One man says that the B744 can not takeoff from an 3000 m runway when the weight is +390 T... And the other says that a MD11 requires 3500 m of runway in +20 degrees and sea level... And the question is this true?? It sounds pretty much to me... |
747-400F with GE CF6-80C2B5F engines:
all data is flaps 20 and metric tons: EGPK/PIK, so elevation 65msl rwy 9500' (rwy 31 from intersection) 390.7 at 14C 389.8 at 16C KSAV/SAV, so again aground sea level rwy 9201' 383.2 at 14C 382.1 at 16C in both cases, you could get another 4.5 tons by turning the air conditioning packs off for take-off, or perhaps even more when applying a correction to the specific airport, and not using the generic weight increase. |

Ok, I punched a couple of numbers into the performance software, starting with 3000m TORA going up to 3600m in 100m increments, no slope, no clearway, no stopway.
Elevation was MSL, ISA standard day (15°C, 1013 hPa), power optimum, flaps optimum, A/I off and A/C off. You can take out the max. TOW (286.0 t) with a TORA of 3300m, using max. power and a flap setting of 23.5°. 3200m would give you 285.8t being Performance and Field Length limited. With a temperature of 20°C on MSL it is just the same... 3300m TORA is sufficient to take out 286.0t. But if you meant ISA+20°C, i.e. 35°C at MSL, you need 3600m TORA for MTOW. 3500m is only good enough for 283.2t. Regards |

The standard Airport Planning Manuals show the runway requirements for ISA and higher, like ISA+15C. Pilots no doubt have more detailed manuals, extending to conditions like ISA-15C, and well past that.
