mp3 player headset connections
 

Hi there everybody,

I am trying to devise a way of playing music from my ipaq, to my headset (bose x) whilst flying.

At the moment I use a lead which i connect into a spare mike socket in the aircraft which plays the music through the intercom system, but it means that the rest of the crew hear it as well which i am trying to avoid.

I have tried putting small earphones on underneath my headset which works, but gets uncomfotable after a while.

I have thought of getting a headset splitter cable/socket, plugging it in between my headset and the a/c socket, then plugging my ipaq into the spare socket in the splitter to feed the music into the headset, but don't know if this will work, or worse still, damage my headset.

Can anyone help please?

Hey Mate,

I'm certain there was a Bose accessory you could buy that allowed media/mobile plugins, but I've just checked the website and can't find it.

There are a number of other options avaliable, search the Dunnunda & Godzone forums and you should find a few threads with plenty of info on this subject, there are a number of devices out there.

Have also search pprune forums with numerous advanced searches but to no avail.

Try the Transair (UK) web site or Sportys in the US.

I'm sure they both have adapters that take iPOD or mobile phone signals into headsets. Also the iPOD is muted when the squelch lifts on thec radio so you don't miss a call.

Recent Sennheiser and DC ANR sets have MP3/telephone sockets but that won't help you if you're a Bose freak.

im not a pilot, but isnt this dangerous and creates distraction whilst flying? also...an adpater for cell phones? how come us passengers arent allowed cell phones on as they aparently ''interferre'' with the aircraft yet its ok for pilots?

There's a bit of a difference between a pilot having a mobile on for EMG comms versus 350 pax.

As for distraction, I'd guess that if one was listening to lectures, or speak French in 10 easy lessons, that'd be distracting. But listening to personal music would in most cases be relaxing.

Fair questions.

The last one first. Cell phone connections to a headset are used for getting weather information and clearances while on the ground at small airports that don't have towers. This is a significant issue for General Aviation, and these devices are not intended to allow someone to try to chat with Aunt Mildred while airborne.

You have a valid point with regard to distractions, but keep in mind that cruise portions of the flight can be very….mundane. A little Bach in the background is not a bad thing. I just ordered one of these myself, and intend to use it during ocean crossings when radio traffic is light and fatigue a serious problem. But please be assured that when going uphill, downhill, or through busy airspace it will be in my flight bag.

And a word about cell phone interference. At a previous employer we had an airplane do two missed approaches because of an erratic localizer. The problem when away when the FA found the kid’s Game Boy and had him turn it off. And just this past month my current employer had to put out a bulletin telling us about interference problems with crew’s cell phones and radar units when doing system tests on the ground.
