Airbus best secret
some time ago there was a video about the test of the A340-600 RTO.
It is disappeared form the net..why? Because all the tires exploded and cought seriusly on fire! any of you still have the video? please share. |
I believe that is a standard part of the testing process. I remember seeing a 777 doing the same thing - an aborted takeoff then continues to the end of the runway with brakes on full, against engine power. The brakes caught on fire and burst the tires but they have to be able to taxi clear of the runway and last 5 mins or so on fire before the fire appliances in attendance are allowed to put them out.

Exploding and burning of tyres is not a big issue, provided test was done at MTOM and damage was confined to tyres and rims. It´s a case of "Move on folks, it looked spectcular but now there´s nothing to see when the dust has settled". What worries me is the power of sinister Airboos company that is seemingly able to "dissapear" a content from the internet :rolleyes: Airbus has to be stopped and I hereby nominate ZAGORFLY for first president of commity for reducing Airbus influence on internet. Something has to be done before all our bases are belong to them. |
They are secretive in Toulouse, however.....
The video was probably Airbus property and Youtube would have had to remove it upon request.

Sinister's a bit harsh. One or two pictures (or a video) taken out of context can generate an ocean of bad publicity by the uninformed, as for scandal mongering -hardly, as it appears that Inspector Clouseau is alive and well and living near the Pyrenees
If you review the forum threads on these web pages they have a predominant or at least are predisposition towards an anti-airbus bias for reasons I cant fathom. Try and find anything significant on the web involving the 787... Aynayda ,after seeing both videos involving the 340 and the 777 I can say there was a 'minor' difference...the 777's plugs melted after brakes caught fire,and the fire was not very impressive while the 340's didn't..resulting in tyre explosions ,and very impressive fire.
I doubt Airbus removed the video from the net, others tried to remove videos from Youtube, without success. And you have to remember it was a test, and this is the reason of tests, to find weak points and eliminate them. |

When a rejected takeoff test is done during the aircraft certification, there is more than just one thing being measured. The airplane’s maximum gross weight is computed, and the amount of kinetic energy that each wheel, brake, and tire assembly must be able to absorb is determined. Then there are a series of tests conducted (Kinetic energy tests) that demonstrate that the number of wheel, brake, and tire assemblies available (16 on a B747, 12 on B777, 4 on a B727, etc.) will be able to absorb the kinetic energy of the airplane under three (3) conditions; a full stop at maximum gross weight for landing; a full stop after ground acceleration to the critical engine failure speed; and what is known as the most severe stop – conducted at the most critical combination of airplane landing weight and speed. Some of these data are gathered on a dynamometer – a rather sophisticated piece of ground test equipment – specifically designed for these tests. Some of these data are gathered “the old fashioned way” – via flight testing of the airplane. The only accelerate-stop test that must be conducted at a specific brake wear state is the maximum brake kinetic energy demonstration, which must use brakes that have no more than 10 percent of the allowable brake wear range remaining. The accelerate-stop test runs are conducted at weight and speed combinations that will provide an essentially even distribution of test conditions over the range of weights, speeds, and brake energies for which takeoff data will be provided in the Airplane Flight Manual. And, of significant importance, the maximum brake energy “accelerate-stop” demonstration has to be conducted at not less than the maximum takeoff weight; it has to be preceded by at least a 3-mile taxi with all engines operating at maximum ground idle thrust; AND it has to be preceded by at least three full stop landings, using normal braking. Graciously, following the maximum brake energy stop, it is not necessary to demonstrate the airplane’s ability to taxi – as, sometimes, it won’t be able to do that - which shouldn't surprise anyone. |
thank you ! is this the video but Airbus have cutted the remaing part. The one of the tires blows! Never mind is not my intention to say bad think about airbus, I love Airbusses as Boeings. BUT HERE in an aviation enthusiast forum I like to post my and read the others opinion on this or that. I find that is suspicios that AIRBUS engineers did not secure that those tires security plugs were in order. The crew was allarmed too! asking for a ladder to evacuate the cockpit ASAP when the fire (apparently) poorly managed by the fire brigate broke out quite seriusly under the tanks.
Whatever..After a RTO if the crew ask me to exit the plane I will take them very seriusly and evaquate as fast I will be able to. warm regards. |
Actually, I've not seen what you describe. I stumbled on the video after typing my response and unfortunately it seems my memory is not is good as I had hoped. Still, I hope the video proved useful to the initial poster. |
Seem to remember at the time this video surfaced our local AIB office said the test, with the fire, burst tyres and rather 'excessive' smoke, was actually performed at a landing weight 5 tonnes over the certification requirement. Not sure why, perhaps for future landing weight increase?

It was a test, it was removed due to a copyright violation, and the fire and explosion was caused by an idiot fireman turning the hose on the wheels, resulting in the inevatible.
Can't say the A340 was at fault. |
