Program for creating CBT courses
 

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a program that can be used to create a computer based training course for students' home study?

Something a little more professional than powerpoint - and allows a mix of animation, video and photo and sound.

Adobe can be VERRY cleaver and allow linking to video files etc – I belive Flash and others can be cleaver as well.

But one point consider is your customers may not wish to have to install new programmes – and they’ll all have Powerpoint

Try Macomedia Authorware. Takes a fair bit of know how to develop a course. Not for the faint hearted.

Also the software is fairly specialised so it can be pricey.

In addition to Authorware, take a look at Macromedia Captivate. You can do lots of fundamental things right off the bat, but as with Authorware, the ability to use the more interesting features has a steep learning curve. I've used them both but not enough to be as proficient as I'd like.

Note that Macromedia provides a free 30 day demo of both of these programs. No features are disabled--it just stops working after 30 days. If you purchase the software you can enter the code and continue to use the version you installed... you don't have to uninstall it and reinstall a full version.

Looking back at what I've written, I feel compelled to mention that I've got no connection with Macromedia at all, (except that I've used Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash for years) so I've got no financial incentive in suggesting that you take a look.

You could surprise yourself with the capabilities of PowerPoint, particularly ver 2003 with animations etc. Acrobat is also very useful.
External authoring is very expensive; internal authoring with proprietary programs is very time consuming.
Keep your plans simple, use something that you and others understand and can update easily / quickly.

Thank-you all for your suggestions. Will start looking at Adobe, and move on to the other suggestions in time.

The project will start just with the (extensive) mods to our aircraft that are not covered in the manufacturer's CBT course.
