So winglets;

1. Increase Aspect ratio which leads to lower induced drag
2. Assist in the removal of vortices at slightly different points at the end of wings which alone create extra drag

(a) produce a result SIMILAR to an increase in AR

(b) reduce the intensity or strength of the vortex which would be shed in their absence.
