Purpose of Ailerons
 

Can someone explain if this statment is correct or incorrect and why.
Do ailerons change the camber of the wing? Or do they change the surface area of the wing?

Ailerons chang the camber of the aerofoil,either decreasing or increasing lift dependant whether their down or p going.

The ailerons also change the angle of attack of the wing .Therefore affecting the lift and drag at that part of the wing .
As you use ailerons to increase lift you induce drag which creates adverse yaw and will need rudder to minimize the effects of drag on the side where lift and drag has been increased.
This is why you have to use rudder as you use aileron to keep the aircraft in co-ordinated flight.
Be mindful of this if you are close to the stall and experience a wing drop ,any attempt to lift the wing with aileron alone may increase the angle of attack and stall that wing .
A co-ordinated use of Rudder and Aileron will help prevent further wing drop .
The are many different designs of aircraft and most small general aviation aircraft designs do not change the surface area of the wing in any measurable way in flight .
The camber is changed and this affects the angle of attack.
