Can anybody site any examples of aircraft upgrading that was designed mathmatically without a proof of concept aircraft prototype being built.

I am trying to identify a factual link to establish the expectations of the predicted mathmatical results of an aircraft upgrade against the actual performance of the prototype proof of concept.
