Handling the Big Jets

I occassionally refer to this excellent book by David Davies, and had reason to do so again recently prior to a Tech Exam for an interview. It was originally published in 1967 and although since revised it is still outdated in many ways. Can anyone suggest a publication along similar lines which covers the same sort of technical material and encompasses the advances in technology in the past 30 or so years. I recall a US publication ' aerodynamics for naval aviators' or some such title which was around about 10 years ago......

Hi there,

I have that book you're talkin about..it's just great!! The other one 'aerodynamics for naval avtr' is still available, I bought it less than a year ago on amazon. There is one more book that is probably as close to 'handling big jets' as you're gonna get and it's called 'The turbine pilots flight manual' by Gregory Brown/Mark Holt. Been updated a few times and is quite good but doesn't go into handling as much as the other one.

Good luck

An excellent book; my copy is 3rd edition, dated 1987, and well thumbed. Very sadly, there will be no more updates from David Davies himself, as he died recently.
His obituary in The Times described him as 'the test pilot's test pilot'. An appropriate epitaph for a true professional.
RIP.

I too have those books, with the exception of the "naval aviators" one.

A couple of other good titles might be:

Mechanics Of Flight, by A. C. Kermode and revised by R H Barnard and D R Philpott. currently at 10th edition (I think) and published by Longman

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

also,

Aircraft Flight, by R H Barnard and D R Philpott, again a Longman book.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

Both of these are quite similar to Handling the Big Jets.

looks like you could get the "naval aviators" book together with Mechanics of flight on some sort of deal with Amazon.

Regards
dan
