Advances in air traffic control

Does anybody know of any advances in the ATC side of the industry, whether it be something that has been implented or will most likely be, in the near future? For example, using GPS to reduce the separation between aircraft, and high altitude aircraft to all you to get above the ATC rules. I've a presentation to do on the topic for uni, so any help is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The only thing I've noticed is that a lot more GPS approaches are being published. I'm guessing this should reduce the number of diversions from the smaller fields.
