What's the purpose...
...of the spiral painted in the middle of a commercial jet engine fan??
just curious :) |
It's to make the spinning part of the engine more visible to nature's aviators, so they don't get their feathers pruned, and we don't damage our compressor blades.
|
Japan Air started it,to scare birds, and advise groud crew(with earmuffs on)that engine was still turning.
|
If you look at it at idle, tends to strobe at you.
Very noticeable & a damn good idea. |
they should make the whole fan be painted with a spiral!........then again.the ground crew might get hipmotised (spelling?)....

Hypnotised!
LOC :) |

Can the bird react fast enough to avoid the running engine just by looking at the sprial.

I thought it was to help the engineer/headset person on start up to tell whether the fan was rotating in the correct direction, not windmilling in reverse.

Sorry, but we can't see which way the fan's spinning from the crewroom!
