FMS/FMC in the 747-100/200/300
Did the 747-100/200 have a FMS/FMC? How was it different than the ones in the 47-400s?
Most of them have an old fashioned PPS or PMS, but some airlines have retrofitted FMS's. . .. .Mutt
The 747-100 and early -7F models of the 747-200 didn't have anything except the autopilots and a very Mark 1 Autothrottle. The later -7Q and -7r powered 747-200/300's had a Performance Management System (PMS) retrofit that worked OK if the EPR and CADC interfaces were working as published.

Hi all,. .We have some -200 freighters (RR D4s), fitted with FMS!. .Cheers.
PMS would just measure performance, how about flying to waypoints, navaids- was everything done manually?. .. .Also what about approaches, could you do a coupled approach or not?
The approach is managed by the autopilots not the FMC.
Sorry, as regards navigation, typically classics have INS so you can enter your waypoints into this and then slave the autopilot to it.
Thanks for the reply twistedenginestarter. I had it all wrong about the FMS. I just assumed some things like the coupled approaches - but as my coach would say, "Never assume because it makes an ass out of U and ME."
The classic 2/300's I fly don't have a PMS or FMC. Just the good old carousel IV INS.. . This highly advanced unit has some desirable features, like built in track offset.
Yes, but unfortunately, you have to also type in EVERY single waypoint, with a maximum of 9 each time.. .In this day and age, with aircraft flying at Mach .86, but that's another story, we still have flight plans with under 10 minutes between waypoints, in a relatively straight line, where the local ATC want us to report, I really can't imagine why, with estimates given for each one well in advance, ahh, am I talking about Indian airspace again, silly me!. .With the capability of only 9 waypoints, it certainly keeps you busy.. .Cheers!
