Boeing 777 Nose Camera
During a recent walk around a camera in the nose cone was observed. There is nothing mentioned in the Boeing FCOM and cannot find any reference on its function.

Some American airline have forward view cameras for their Pax IFE systems.

Awesome..Thanks

likely nothing to do with passenger entertainment. The 777-300 has nose wheel camera and a camera at the top of the fin. Both viewable in the flightdeck on the MFD screens. Both are to aid with taxying the airplane but i always found them a distraction. The tail fin one is useful if you need to do a 180 on the runway to see where the main wheels are in relation to the edge.

Pax IFE camera. The flight deck nosewheel camera is behind the nosewheel not in front

There are 2 cameras located, one on each horizontal stabiliser, Not the vertical fin. Three pictures on the selected display. Always useful on narrow taxiways and doing 180's. The one pictured above is for IFE. |
Do you have access to IFE cameras on the flight deck?

No, we don't get access to what those particular cameras are showing in the flight deck. The view outside the windows is better :) |
Surely a camera at the top of the fin would be unable to see the main wheels at all, rendering it pretty useless for anything other than pax entertainment?

Think people are confusing the A380 tail camera on the top of the tail with the 777 stabiliser cameras. The stabiliser camera are wonderful and you can see both gear, enabling precise control and positioning on 180 turns on runways and also turns onto narrow taxiways.
It is galling that I am redundant from the 777 yet there are people doing walk rounds and flying who don’t even know the cameras on the aircraft they are supposedly rated on and still flying. Says a lot to me about redundancy processes in some parts of the world. |
Wingtip cameras might be pretty useful. Possibly from the tail fin or right at the winglet.
|
The problem with wingtip cameras is that they're liable to get damaged when you hit something. :O

The nose cone is for the weather radar !!!!!

Securaplane’s ground maneuvering camera system (GMCS) is standard equipment aboard all Boeing 777-300 aircraft. It provides pilots with real-time views of the landing gear, ground conditions and proximity to the pavement edge during taxi maneuvers using cameras mounted behind the nose gear and in both leading edges of the horizontal stabilizer. The images appear on a three-way, split screen, flight deck video display. The basic system is comprised of three cameras and a taxi camera interface unit (TCIU).
