Now that is what I call a Greaser

A Capital Airlines USA Viscount belly landing on foamed runway due unable to lower landing gear. A beautiful wheels up touch down right at the beginning of the foam.

I liked the guy with the pipe at the 4 minute mark. I've often wondered where the ignition points originate in prangs

I was intrigued as to what caused this accident, but I could find no information. However, I did find a more recent belly-landing, closer to home. Also a greaser, but no foam this time!

HERALD IN MALAYSIA

I witnessed a very similar landing with much the same precision by a Handley Page Herald in Malaysia in 1976. the pilot put it on the ground exactly at the start of the foam path.

Two interesting features:
  • While the aircraft was burning off fuel and the airport being prepared for the "emergency" the RMAF convened the BOI and it had its first meeting. The Chairman then joined us in the tower. to observe. On his second last low pass, the Herald pilot asked if the BOI Chairman was in the tower and when I told him "Affirmative" (that's the word we used for "yes" in those days) he asked the Chairman to tell him what to do. Stoic silence from the Chairman!
  • When looking at accident summaries to confirm the date I see it has been reported as occurring at Subang, following a diversion from Simpang. Not from my memory; this was the day Tun Razak's body was being ferried from London and the aircraft was diverted to Butterworth to ensure both Subang and Simpang were available if needed for the B707 carrying the body and other aircraft ferrying mourners.
