Mask against COVID in the cockpit
 

simple question: do your Airlines request the pilot to wear a mask all the time in the cockpit to prevent contamination of the colleague cockpit crew?

Currently we are not required to but may wear them voluntarily. In that case surgical masks are supplied by the company. However it is compulsory on the simulator.

How about headsets, mics and cockpit surfaces like keyboards, touchscreens and switches and such? I remember SWA disinfecting their cockpits against corona. Can this practically work?
Luxemburg Air Ambulance fly their Learjets with masks and gloves now.

I haven't seen any official manufacturer/caa sanctioned procedure to clean a cockpit, much less disinfect it. Usually cleaners are not allowed inside a cockpit to prevent any chemical product or liquid spill damaging the instruments. I am curious to see how is SWA procedure, do you have any copy/reference?

The task force here in the US recommends wearing your own headset. Personally, I clean the cockpit as much as I can, then go wash my hands.

Flew with a captain wearing a mask the other day. Couldn't understand a word he was saying. Became a safety issue

If masks are worn in the flightdeck they should incorporate a Mic, similar to military. Not sure if any exist for civilian use such as this though.

#EASA only reccommends the use of face masks for crew members dealing directly with passengers and/or all crew members of MedEvac flights, ambulance and so on.

According to me, safety issue with the time needed to don the O2 mask, fumes or odor recognition, communication, extra equipment to manage,
what s more, what about drinking/ eating.

Just did my lpc/opc and there was a note on oxygen mask use in Sim. Not to be used. If needed remove it from it's container as you normally would, don't wear it, just leave it out and do the magic to recover the mic.

If there is any requirement for pilots, i sure would love to see the required safety case. As mentioned above there are safety issues that have to be dealt with, like how easy is a pilot with mask understood? What to do in the case of smoke, fumes, fire, loss of pressurization? Will there be any issue at high altitudes (remember, no requirement in EASAland for one to wear a mask above a certain altitude) and TUC? And of course, how often to change the mask, which kind of mask (N95/99). And of course, how does that impede on biological requirements (drinks, food). Not to mention, the nuisance of unlocking the iPad with a code instead of just looking at it.Of course, during briefing time it could be somewhat sensible, during flight operation? I seriously doubt it.
