How many times it did happen, that an MTOW loaded A321 needed an immediate return while A/THR was still operative. And how much extra workload was it for the crew to recycle it.

We don’t have that note in our QRH other than in the slats/flaps jammed abnormal procedure which is a special case. A321 NEOs, if it makes a difference. Edit: The note is in our FCTM. |
The problem with a heavy 321 is not the normal approaches but the insane ATC speed requirements on descent or "reduce minimum speed in the cruise" which is not much less than the current cruise speed.

That doesn’t seem to be an A321 problem, really. |

Will they do it? Well, they do think about a new narrow body aircraft anyway, but of course a different wing (and pleeeaaasee: an updated flight deck) could ensure continued production well into the next 10 to 20 years.
several options were proposed but the most likely option to be approved will be a combo of 2 A380 (10 inch) screens and 4 A350 screens (15 inch) The option that includes 6 A350 screens would require the nose section to be enlarged so it won’t be approved. A third option includes 4 very large displays (20inch) and would take the A320/330 beyond A350 level of technology. |
It would be nice if there was an updated flightdeck for the A320NEO, but as far as i know the development for that was stopped in Q2 2019 due to low consumer (airline) interest and to improve Airbus financial performance, simply said to save some money.

I would rather the fbw was upgraded to the latest standards as found on newer Airbus products.
