Should Airbus be advised after a severe turbulence encounter
Yes according to Airbus.
"In case of severe turbulence it is also recommended to inform Airbus.Note that in some remote cases we have determined that limit loads have been locally exceeded. In these cases some additional inspections (On top of what is recommended in AMM section 05-51-17) may be required." From the Airbus Safety First magazine #2. I wonder if other manufacturers recommend the same. |
They do, its why its best to get your QAR / FDR downloaded in the event, and data off to the manufacturer.

Definitely should be reporting severe turbulence incidents to maintainence to do a check.

I waited an hour to take a 330 to the Caribbean after it arrived in the UK having suffered a major upset. Airbus cleared us to go after the download.

Maintenance is via a logbook entry. But one doesn't really know if maintenance is sending the info to the manufacturer. Not a typical pilot responsibility of course.

Since when do pilots contact manufacturers for maintainence issues? We fly the plane and report all and any incidents and abnormalities that may affect the safety of the aircraft to our maintainence. At least that's what we do in the operation I work for. Up to maintainence to decide what they want to do from there.
Just bringing up a point that us of interest and knowledge. And actually, as I am sure you well considered, pilots could be in a position where they want to make sure this is done if they have more responsibility over such issues such as at an ACJ(business jet) operator. |
