Com failure and step climbs.
Do we do step climbs when in a com failure situation in the cruise?
I would have thought not but all the Jeppesen text says is: "... in accordance with the filed flight plan...". Currently I don't have access to my home countries manuals. I'd appreciate an answer with a definitive reference in a manual from Europe, Australia or the USA if possible. Thanks in advance. |
In the US it is covered by FAR 91.185 (c) (2). While the ultimate fallback for your route in a lost comms situation is your filed route the altitude section makes no mention of your flight plan. |

anybody ever continue across how many countries and FIRs with no comms?? or declare squawk emergency then nordo and return to land

These days, I think it would more likely be: follow the fighter that intercepted you and land where directed...

The Australian AIP says thus:
ENR 1.1 - Section 6.2.8 (Page 50 of ENR 1.1) ... (5) Maintain the last assigned speed and level for a period of 60 minutes following the aircraft’s failure to report its position over a compulsory reporting point (including ADS-C flights), and thereafter adjust speed and altitude in accordance with the filed flight plan; Note: In OCA, aircraft experiencing communication failure may also initiate strategic lateral offset procedures (SLOP) in accordance with ENR 2.2 Section 2.2, including an offset of up to 2NM right of track. (6) Upon exiting OCA, conform to the relevant State procedures and regulations. |
