Scimitar winglet handling qualities
Has anyone yet flown the 737 or 767 with the new scimitar winglets? How do they affect the handling qualities of the aircraft? I would imagine looking at them that they would increase the aircraft's stability in roll requiring more positive control inputs.
Apart from that, do they cause any noticeable changes in landing or ground effect. I don't see anything in particular in the new 737 FCTM about it; are max crosswind limits changed for example? |
I have been flying with the split scimitars now for over half a year and have found no discernible handling difference. On landing, some in the pilot group have commented on a greater ground effect feel, though I haven't been able to quantify this to any degree.
The permissible cross winds are slightly reduced and the bank angle to have a wingtip drag has been reduced to 9 degrees. My greatest concern has been an unintentional wing drop on take-off or landing in a cross wind. |
The 767 has them now ?

The 767 (and 757) winglets have all been STCs by an outside company (I understand Boeing has been 'helpful' with drawings and technical information, but not directly involved in the design or modification. I have a buddy that works for the company that did the 767 winglet STC and I've not heard any indication that they plan to do a 'split scimitar' configuration for the 767 (or 757) - but I haven't talked to him for a while.
