A320 TR. Do we practice ALL abnormal procedures?

Just reading through the abnormal and emergency procedures, and there seem to be SO many, of which I don't understand many.
I am due to start my type rating next month, so I am just preparing myself, reading whatever I can and just getting an idea of what things are like.

For most of these emergencies, is it usually always just ECAM actions? And then sometimes you refer to the QRH?
Is it as hard as it sounds, or is it actually easier, and it will just make sense once I start TR?

Any advice is appreciated.. :ok:

Each of the exercises on the type rating are programmed. It's work, but it makes sense when you run through it.

Having said that - trash the ECAM and give me a Boeing style QRH any day.

Also NB:

Re-arrange 'Checkboard' and you get 'Dinosaur'.

WhySoTough 2nd Jan 2012 22:18

Thanks for the response.
So are these things that shouldn't be memorized at all?
You just do them as the ECAM states?

Checkboard 2nd Jan 2012 22:26

.. and rearrange "fantom" and get "child of the magenta line" ;)

Boeing conversation: "Damn! What's happening? This is a problem no one's foreseen ... um give me the QRH blah blah checklist ..." Halfway through ... "No, let's go to the QRH whatsit checklist, and use the last half of that..." and so on, until the problem is solved.

Airbus conversation: "Damn .. something's gone wrong which no one's foreseen ... um that engine needs to be shutdown." "But Sir - there's no ECAM up for engine shutdown" "We'll do it from the QRH, then." "Umm but Sir - there IS no paper checklist for ECAM stuff - it's all hidden away by the machine, until IT thinks you might need it!"

Do not memorise ANY abnormal procedure on the bus, save the 7/8 memory items. If you want to memorise anything go for the page on which you find the procedure, then you might want to familiarise yourself with what is affected but the actions are by the book/screen only.

HPbleed 2nd Jan 2012 22:29

And both of those show you need to know your aircraft (whichever aircraft that might be) inside out, how each system works so that you can apply the relevant checklist and where to find that checklist.

Whysotough, there are some memory items too and several ECAMs that are secondary to QRH and OEB's. Good luck.

Nope, don't memorise them ever, the ones you try to memorise will probably be the ones modified by OMN's or OEB's.

As Bobitka says, memorise the memory items, the clues in the name!

Aside from the 'standard' malfunctions the 'Bus has the ability to go wrong in a multitude of ways that the ECAM wizards haven't figured out yet so knowing the systems is a definate help!

As for the Boeing, give me the 777 electronic checklist every time, never seen so much dust on a QRH before.

JMHO!

How a bloke with Boeing blood still flowing through his veins tackled the 320 sim at Airbus Too Loose yonks ago-

"REMEMBER - DO EXACTLY WHAT THE ECAM SAYS AND NEVER SECOND GUESS IT!"

"Ok Monsewer no problem."

"TRUST YOUR ECAM!"

"Yep. With me life."

"AIRBUS AIMS TO HAVE A PAPERLESS COCKPIT!"

"Yeh I know. You all keep telling me that."

[Ding!] FUEL IMBALANCE

Hmm this doesn't look right. But, follow the ECAM like the Frog said.

[Ding!] ENG
[Ding!] ELEC
[Ding!] etc
[Ding!] etc
[Ding!] etc

"Er....Monsewer why is everything dark and quiet and I have no fuel left?"

"BECAUSE YOU WENT AND FOLLOWED THE ECAM!"

"Because I followed the ECAM?"

"OUI, BECAUSE YOU FOLLOWED THE ECAM."

"Ok so what'd I do wrong....exactly?"

"YOU SHOULD'VE CLOSED THE XFEED VALVE AND IGNORED THE ECAM AND GOT OUT THE QRH PAPER CHECKLIST!"

"On the SD I thought there might be a fuel leak but..."

"YOU NEEDED THE PAPER CHECKLIST IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE!"

"Ok, what do I do now?"

"FOLLOW THE ECAM! I SAID THAT AT THE BEGINNING! DON'T YOU LISTEN??"

"Alrighty then."

"THEN FOLLOW THE PAPER CHECKLIST!"

"Ok."

"AREN'T YOU JUST ABSOLUTELY IMPRESSEZ-VOU'D BY THIS WONDERFUL AIRCRAFT?"

"Oh yeh really impressed by your technology mate. But on the Boeing we...."

"SHTARKER -THIS IS AIRBUS! WE DO NOT SAY 'BOEING' HERE!"

"Yeh but...."

"FERMEZ!"

"But I was just saying..."

"ERP!...."

IMHO an Airbus endorsement program is in reality a Boeing appreciation course.

Why has this turned into an ANTI-Airbus thread?
Anyone else willing to give advice to a newbie going to start TR soon? :}

HPbleed 3rd Jan 2012 11:38

Know where to find "stuff." You may not be able to remember it all, but if you know where to find it quickly and under pressure that helps massively. Know how to USE the MEL, FCOM and QRH. Landing distance procedures. Memory items.

TyroPicard 3rd Jan 2012 13:56

Are you currently flying another type? If so do not even look at A320 memory items until after your last flight. But start learning them on Day 1 of the course!
I would suggest looking at FCOM 1 if you want technical background, and FCTM for handling gen - but focus on flying your current type...

Why has this turned into an ANTI-Airbus thread?
Because what the Antichrist is to Mankind is what the Airbus is to Boeing.

On top of everything else there are 178 computers on the 320
(I counted 'em) and can go wrong at anytime. What HPbleed
said was essentially correct. You must know that QRH inside
out and backwards, with the ability to look up items in good
time - for example you should not waste valuable minutes by
reading up the directions given on 80.15 for the calculation of
distances when its imperative to get down on the deck asap.

FCOMs are all redesigned so forget the old refs you came to
know by heart. If you get a T/L Fault or Disagree for example
then have an idea that its written somewhere in Power Plant
section of the PRO ABN's.

And knowing your Memory Items in toto goes without saying.
