Widebody cargo loading
 
(At first I accidentally placed this thread into another topic, I repeat it here now)
Just curious: How is the cargo loading/C.G calculation is done on specialized cargo aircraft like the 747F, -400F or MD-11? Is it done "manually", I mean using laptops or purpose built handheld computers? Or have these aircraft got some onboard C.G system that senses/indicates the actual C.G?
Is the operation of the cargo handling/C.G. systems included in the AOM or in a separate "cargo master manual"?

In the 747, while the airplane did have a loading calculation system which could determine CG as the aircraft sat on it's gear, it's not active or able in our airplanes. We do everything using a computer based calculation formula,and all crewmembers are required to show proficiency in using the system. We use dedicated loadmasters who plan, prepare, load, and verify what's on board, but because we operate to far-reaching locations where capabilities of the modern world aren't always available, we're required to be able to do it ourselves as crewmembers.

Depending on the airline and the station, weight & balance can be done on a computer (desktop in the office or laptop on board) or manually with pencil & paper & handheld calculator (or more pen & paper).

balaton, on board W&B systems are used as a rough check. Actual calculations done by hand (be it pen/paper or laptop).

I believe that the new 777F has the option for a weight balance system. It uses sensors in the landing gear to determine weight and balance. However i don't know how accurate it is. I'd imagine that in theory it would be relatively easy to get accurate info.

Onboard system has been around for some years, have seen it on 747 classic and -400 as well as a340-300. But regularly de-activated due to reliability issues. Theoretically it should be the ideal answer but doesnt seem to have got the reliability yet after quite a few years in service.
