Bae 146 / RJ85 Brakes
 

Hello everybody,

Just a question for you Bae 146 / RJ85 drivers, do the brakes on this airplanes have any sort of ventilation for the turn arounds? I was just wondering, since the airplane is not equipped with thrust reversers and the brakes could overheat, specially when landing at short runways, etc.

Yep, the 146/RJ does have brake fans fitted to aid cooling during turnrounds. If any of the brake fans are inop, then the MEL stipulates that brake cooling periods have to be extended.

The brake fans are very effective (especially if the park brake is off). They also make a hell of a noise.

I was told at Hatfield (when I did my course in 1987) that they were retrofitted to cater for quick turnrounds in places like Oz where they couldn't get the brake temperatures down quick enough using natural cooling.

A320's have them aswell

They won't over-heat on a short runway. Carbon brakes are great.

Not flown the beast since 2001, but on some strips had to really use the brakes to their max ability.

On touch-down, wing-spoilers up and press hard on the brakes and then count 3...2...1. then feel the deceleration.

As long as there were minimal brake applications after that you could keep the temps well below 750 degrees. Even on a 35+ degree day.

On shorter legs, drop the gear a few minutes early and start with a low brake temp in the first place.

yes the rj has electic brake fans, the newer brakes have some heat shields resulting in slightly longer cooling times but otherwise no problems.

my complaining collegue regularly tells tales of rj bus drivers coming in on a 3000m runway, slamming the brakes on and taking the first or second exit with the result of cooking all the brakes..... well done dimwit :ugh:

half a day out of ops due to the engineers having to replace all the brakes and main wheels....

in my old company when a driver did that he had to go and work with the engineers for a day - they always gave them brake and wheel changes to do! :D

I find the brake fans to be very effective. Quite often with a heavy load into LCY you'd get the brakes to their max temp (amber 750c) before pulling onto stand. Once on stand they cool down in no time. (park brake set)

I do try to switch them off when boarding, and brakes are 1 dot green, to reduce the noise. I've only once had a brake fan inop so far.
