fuel tanks 737-800
 

Hi,


Does the fuel flow around the wing from root to tip as you make a turn in the 737.Or is the wing and tank built in such a way to avoid this.

Fuel movement within tank
 

Have not had anything to do with the B737, however it likely has numerous baffles within the wing tanks to prevent "sloshing" of the fuel, especially away from the pumps.

OF is of course correct - there are baffle plates and tank dividers - BUT assuming the turn is 'balanced' there is no reason why the fuel should move anywhere! As far as the fuel in the tanks is concerned the a/c is effectively flying level when it is turning, if that makes sense.

If, however, you flew along with bank on (but not turning) the fuel would tend to flow downhill, but not many of us do that.

The wing has ribs & cutouts to prevent sloshing of fuel.also there are baffle ribs with NRCV [non return check valves] to keep the fuel inboard where the Boost pumps are.
The fuel tank does not extend to the tip but rather stops short of it & has provision for a surge tank in case of overfill.
