Aerodynamic surfboard
Does anybody know which is the best aerodynamic way to carry a surfboard on top of a car. I mean, zero or negative lift, and minimun
drag. Thanks guys. |
I used to leave my single fin on the top of the board but I found it was getting fatigue from all the constant airflow at 70mph. Depends what shape etc.

Thruster?
Inside my rig, fins up

fins up, nose rocker provides downward wind force at speed
always check (and replace asap when showing wear) your occy chords - elastic straps. I can attest to the destruction of beloved stick when it departs from said car at 100 km/hr |
Variables
Fin up with end of board to front of car. Also stops the wax melting onto the roof.:E

Relative airflow at the front of the windscreen is down, so definately fins up it pointy end forwards - it's probably approximating the airflow. I've also had success fins down and forward, pointy end aft.
|
fins up and aft. also consider a bag to get a zero-lift-shape. max speed 120 km/h with 2 longboards on top for me.

Today I'm Watching
I'm about to jump in the beater and head for Half Moon Bay. I love California. Anybody know where I'm going? I'll bring pictures back.

Mavericks?

Thanks, guys, I really appreciate it.

Fins forward. Looks better, and if your straps loosen from aerodynamic stress cruising down the highway, the skegs will catch before the board slides all the way back and flies off your car into the traffic behind you. Better to pull over with your board hanging by the straps in one piece, than to have it smashed up over 500 feet of freeway. Trust me on that one.

believe it or not but i've forgotten to tie my board down before and driven down the highway at 100kph for about 20mins and it didn't fall off until i slowed down and went around a roundabout at about 10kph. Was inside a bag and didn't get any damage at all!

Mine actually was in one piece when it hit the ground....until the lifted-so-high-it's-barely-street-legal pickup truck behind me ran it over at 75 MPH.
