Replace the starter valve

Replace the starter valve
Not necessarily, sorry. It CAN also mean to open the start valve manually and close it manually to get the engine running and to make that flight or even some more....

At least on my airbus.;)

If its stuck open then a (usually) 3/8" square drive is needed to go through the appropriate access door and shut it once the donk is self sustaining....

A stuck open start valve all the way to idle would probably result in a start valve and a starter moter replacement.

I have on larger Buses >320... The starter valve /motor open to idle speed, and the gears came out of the starter moter and embedded themselves in the adjacent IDG requiring replacement of both. ( I wish I could find pics to display)
:ouch:

Yes Bolty, this CAN happen. However I see it that way

- VALVE STUCKS OPEN - start the appropiat procedure soon to avoid damage
- shut down engine
- get maintenance
- either manual valve ops or
if damage
- get another aircraft;)

Incident Investigation (with photos) of the starter failure that Bolty speaks of.

The second attempt was a manual start lasting 6 minutes
No wonder it failed, unless you have a tailpipe fire that you are trying to extinguish, why on earth would you have a starter engaged for 6 minutes? It doesn't say in the report why it was for so long!

With regard to this particular failure, I just recently had this as a "distractor" in the simulator. During the engine start sequence we are taught not to take any action on the engine master switches until the FADEC triggers the ECAM. So, is it possible for the engine to get damaged before the "start-valve tuck open" ECAM message appears?

Yes, definitelly. Sparks came out of the starter air exhaust hole in the cowling ramp agent yelling, A321 .

Starter Motor collapsed no ECAM.

If we get a faulty start valve. We {if in stock} replace the valve or we do the manual start and get to see some views at 35,000ft for the turn-around. Nice easy job to replace the start valve {A319}
