When doing a single engine taxi out, I've been told by a friend that the second engine must be running by the time the aircraft enters an active runway. So, even if entering a runway to backtrack (like 14 at EGNM), the engine must be running.

Why is this? I can understand that the engine must be running for at least two minutes before takeoff, or you get a CTR Tank warning, but why can't you save fuel at somewhere like Leeds on 14 and start the engine whilst going up Rwy 32 to backtrack onto 14? Why must the engines both be running by the time you enter the runway?

well depending on the age of the engine, the engine(cfm 56-5) should be allowed between 3mins(new engine)-5mins(older engine) to warm up to normal temperature before going to TO power. failure to do so will shorten engine life and increase maintenance costs. some engine specialists that i have spoken too, do not recommend 1 engine taxi because pilots do not allow enough time for warm up of the other engine.... so please be nice to the engines and don't worry too much about saving fuel in this case

On the V2500 the limits are Oil temp 50 degrees. 5 minutes if the engine has been shut down for more than 2 hours and a minimum of 3 minutes to prevent thermal shock and the the testing of the center tank pumps as takeoff on center tank is prohibited. This is as per Airbus FCOM one engine taxi Supp procedures. I hope this helps?

Can anyone tell me why Airbus requires the APU to be running for single-engine taxy after landing? Obviously it gives electrical redundancy but what exactly are they afraid is going to happen if the No 1 gen fails? Normal brakes are powered by the Green system - No 1 engine mechanical pump - and the Yellow system powers the parking brakes etc plus you have accumulator pressure as backup?

So you can have bleed air to crank the engine in case of tail pipe fire.
