747 -rwy length
For the 747 operators: would it be possible to operate a 747 on a rwy with a length of 3100 m and field elevation of 2000' ?
if so , can you give me some examples? Brgds |
Yup Sao Paolo is 2459ft up and has one Runway of 3700m and one of 3000m. Usually the longer one is used for departures but the shorter one should be fine for all but longest flights and hottest days.
3100m is a longish runway but you need to take into account Temperature and how far the flight is going. 1500m is enough if you only want to go for an hour or 2. |
Yes, 3100m and 2000' is useable for a lot of ops.
I used to fly out of Nadi in Fiji, and it is 3200m and rather warm all the time. Would could depart at up around 370 tonnes I think, close to the MOTW of the Classic which is 377 tonnes. 1500m is unfortunately pretty much only good to taxy on. ;) |

747 notoriously uses Rand airport, which is 1500 m long, hot and high and, even worse, just 15 m wide. |
747 notoriously uses Rand airport, which is 1500 m long, hot and high and, even worse, just 15 m wide. I doubt that you would be able to get airborne again but I don't have the graphs to hand so I may be wrong here. (Rand is about 5500' amsl) Regards csd |
Alexban,
3100m ? Comfortable, as 18-Wheeler indicated. The 747 will get out of 2500m for a short distance flight (1-2 hours flight), 3000m for a medium distance flight, and 3500m for a very long distance flight. |
Thank you very much for all the answers, much appreciated.

Alex,
We operate the Sp/100/200/300/400 series of the B747.... you might get a better answer if you actually stated what series of aircraft you are interested in.... Mutt |
Check out the domestic routes of JAL / All Nippon etc. They have used 747SR's 30+ years there in some fairly short runways at light TOGW.

Rand has had two 747 arrivals, one a -200 and, more recently, an -SP. Both museum pieces now and will probably only ever depart - in pieces.
Certainly not RPT services with 747s. Nice bit of flying, though! :ok: |
